From Engines to Employment at Cummins: Joshua’s Journey

When Joshua joined Creating Tomorrow College in September 2023, he already knew where his passion lay. Fascinated by engines and determined to pursue a career in mechanical engineering, he arrived with a clear goal, but also an understanding that he would need guidance and support to get there.

His journey began by creating a Vocational Profile, setting out his ambitions, strengths, and the support he needed. This profile helped his job coaches match him with the right opportunities, ensuring every placement moved him closer to his dream.

First Steps with Cummins

Joshua completed several placements that gave him hands-on experience and helped build his confidence. But the biggest opportunity came when he secured a work placement at Cummins, a world-leading engineering company through our Pathway to Employment programme.

Working two days a week in the Tear Down area, Joshua learnt how faulty engines are examined and repaired. With guidance of his work experience mentor, Billy, he developed new skills, adapted to workplace expectations, and grew in confidence. Before long, his hours increased, preparing him for the next big step.

Supported Internship

In September 2024, Joshua began a Supported Internship at Cummins. Already familiar with the workplace, his colleagues, and the company culture, he was ready to take on a key role.

Joshua’s job involved masking sensitive areas of engines before painting – a vital part of the manufacturing process. To help him succeed, his job coach, Daniel, spent two weeks shadowing a long-term employee, Connor, and broke down the tasks into manageable steps through a process known as Job Carving. With this personalised support, Joshua was set up to thrive.

‘I believe I was ready for employment, but I needed some help to get there – I needed some help to improve my skills’.

Progress and Growth

The first weeks came with challenges. Moving from college to full-time work was a big adjustment, but Joshua adapted quickly. He listened to feedback, refined his techniques, and soon found a balance between accuracy and speed. Showing real commitment, he even asked for longer hours to meet expectations.

A Future Secured

By late 2024, Joshua’s hard work was paying off. Impressed by his performance, Cummins offered him a paid role. His Supported Internship came to a successful end four months early, and in March 2025 he officially began working as a Cummins employee.

For Joshua, this was more than just a job, it was the start of the career he had always wanted.

Today, Joshua’s journey stands as a reminder that, with the right environment and encouragement, young people with SEND can not only find their place in the workplace – they can thrive there.
