Finding Confidence and Independence: Tyrone’s Journey to Supported Internship

When Tyrone joined our Kettering Campus, he was ready for a fresh start. After spending his school years across specialist and mainstream settings, he knew what it felt like to be supported – and what it felt like not to be. His experience in mainstream school had been challenging, with bullying and setbacks that affected his confidence. But arriving at college marked a turning point.

For two years, Tyrone embraced college life, made new friends, and discovered a place where he felt respected and treated like an adult. By his second year, he felt ready for something more – eager to step out of the classroom and into the world of work.

Building Skills Through Real Experience

During his time at college, Tyrone completed work experience placements at gyms in and around Corby. While valuable, they didn’t quite feel like the right long-term fit.

Everything changed when he moved onto his Supported Internship. Tyrone found himself in a workplace where he felt welcomed, supported, and trusted from day one.

The staff were friendly, patient, and genuinely committed to helping him grow. With the support of his Job Coach and the college team, Tyrone began developing the skills he needed to work independently – tackling a wide range of tasks with growing confidence.

There’s only one job he jokes he’s not keen on:

‘Not cleaning the toilets!’

But everything else? He approached with determination and pride.

Discovering the Right Path

Tyrone’s Supported Internship quickly became the best work experience he’d ever had. He loves the environment, the people, and the sense of belonging.

And as he gained more independence – including being able to take the bus to work on his own – his future began to feel clearer. He realised he didn’t just enjoy his placement; he could see himself working there permanently.

He works hard every day, not just to complete tasks, but to show he’s committed and capable. His goal is simple, and he’s focused on achieving it:

He wants to earn a paid job where he is now – and he’s well on his way.

Looking Ahead

Even though Tyrone now spends five days a week on his Supported Internship, he is still part of the Kettering Campus community. He knows the college is always there for him – checking in, encouraging him, and making sure he has everything he needs to succeed.

As he puts it:

‘I really like it here and am supported well by the college and staff. If I’m not sure, I can always ask someone.’

Tyrone’s journey is still unfolding – but with his determination, growing independence and the right support around him, he’s working toward a future where he can continue doing the job he enjoys – this time as a paid employee.
